From Ancient Greek ὀφθᾰλμῐκός (ophthalmikós, of or for the eyes; ophthalmic surgeon), from ὀφθᾰλμός (ophthalmós, eye) +‎ -ῐκός (-ikós, -ic, adjectival suffix).
