From Ancient Greek ὀφθᾰλμῐκός (ophthalmikós, “of or for the eyes; ophthalmic surgeon”), from ὀφθᾰλμός (ophthalmós, “eye”) + -ῐκός (-ikós, “-ic”, adjectival suffix).
