From Old Swedish padda, from Old Norse padda. Of uncertain origin, but possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bed- (“to swell”) (Pok. 96), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰew- (“to swell”) (Pok. 98-102), which would indicate a Proto-Germanic *paddǭ. Cognate with Icelandic padda, Danish padde.
