From Old Swedish padda, from Old Norse padda. Of uncertain origin, but possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bed- (to swell) (Pok. 96), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰew- (to swell) (Pok. 98-102), which would indicate a Proto-Germanic *paddǭ. Cognate with Icelandic padda, Danish padde.

Compare English puddle, Old English puduc (swelling, lump, growth, wart), Low German puddig (swollen).
