From papyro- (“papyrus, paper”) + xylo- (“wood, wood pulp”) + -in (“forming substances made from living things”), after the model of earlier pyroxylin.

- 1894, Selimo R. Bottone, Electrical Instrument Making for Amateurs, 6th edition, page 26:
- Gun-paper, or papyroxyline, is paper which has been immersed for a few seconds in a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids, and then washed in an abundance of water.
