Ancient Greek purple red: compare French phénicine.

- (chemistry) A purple powder precipitated when a sulphuric solution of indigo is diluted with water.
- (chemistry) A colouring matter produced by the action of a mixture of strong nitric acid and sulphuric acid on phenylic alcohol.
