Derived from English pickaninny or perhaps Portuguese pequenino (boy, child), which was the ultimate source of pickaninny. Compare Bajan pickney, Bislama pikinini, Pijin pikinini, and Tok Pisin pikinini. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?).
