  1. (archaic) A method of training trees or shrubs in the shape of a cone or distaff by tying down the branches and pruning.
    • 1849, Andrew Jackson Downing, The Fruits and Fruit Trees of America, page 37:
      The French quenouille training is performed with dwarf stocks, but the trees are mor thrifty and durable when grafted on their own stocks, and kept within proper bounds by root pruning, after Mr. Rivers' method, explained in a previous page.
