From Ancient Greek σωφροσύνη (sōphrosúnē, soundness of mind, prudence, temperance) from σώφρων (sṓphrōn, sane, moderate, prudent) (from σῶς (sôs, safe, sound, whole) + φρήν (phrḗn, mind)) +‎ -σύνη (-súnē, abstract noun suffix).
