Etymology edit

From Middle Dutch speecsel, formed from older spekel by analogy with terms suffixed with -sel. The form spekel is from Old Dutch *spēkila, from Proto-Germanic *spaiklō. From the same root as spuwen.

Cognate with German Speichel.
