Etymology edit

From Proto-Germanic *stōjaną, from Proto-Indo-European *stoh₂éyeti. Equivalent to stōw (place) +‎ -ian (infinitive suffix) and cognate with Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐍉𐌾𐌰𐌽 (stōjan).
