From Old Danish thænkia, thænckæ, from Old Norse þekkja (to know, recognise), from Proto-Germanic *þankijaną. The Old Danish form is influenced in its form and its semantics by the Middle Low German cognate denken (think, remember), like Swedish tänka, Norwegian Bokmål tenke, and Norwegian Nynorsk tenkje.
