From Middle Low German *tālken, *talken, from Old Saxon *talkōn (to talk, chatter) with unexpected vowel lengthening, from Proto-West Germanic *talkōn, from Proto-Germanic *talkōną. Cognate with English talk.
Alternatively, from Middle Low German tāligen (to talk, reckon).
