Borrowed from Japanese 炭酸(たんさん) (tansan, carbonated; carbonic acid), an ellipsis of 炭酸飲料(たんさんいんりょう) (tansan inryō, carbonated drink), a genericized trademark by Clifford-Wilkinson Tansan Mineral Water Co., Ltd. popular in the Philippines in the early 20th century, initially romanized and introduced as "TANSAN" on metal bottlecaps and on English marketing material.
