A borrowing from Middle Low German telt(tent). Compare German Zelt. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *del-(split, cut), whence Proto-Germanic *teldą. From the same Proto-Indo-European source Latvian dalīt(divide), deldēt(wear out).[1]
