A borrowing from Middle Low German telt ‎(tent). Compare German Zelt. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *del- ‎(split, cut), whence Proto-Germanic *teldą. From the same Proto-Indo-European source Latvian dalīt ‎(divide), deldēt ‎(wear out).[1]
