From Proto-Germanic *þurftiz; cognate with Old High German durft, Old Swedish þorft (Swedish torft), Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍆𐍄𐍃 (þaurfts). Compare thurvan, tharf and therva.
