From Old Norse tjald (curtain), from Proto-Germanic *teldą. Cognate with Norwegian Bokmål tjeld (curtain, tent), Swedish tjäll (hut), and German Zelt (tent). The modern Danish word telt was borrowed from Low German (like English tilt and Swedish tält (tent)).
