  The poor red or yellow alfalfa has deluded itself. Its admirable spirals are of no use to it. These spirals or screws could only function if they fell from a certain height, from the crown of a tall tree or from a rigid gramineous plant; but put up flush with the grass, they haven't given half a turn before they hit the ground.
