From Proto-Vietic *k-loːk. Cognate with Muong tlốc.

The distribution of this word seems to be from southern Thanh Hoá, throughout the four North Central provinces south of Thanh Hoá, and some rural dialects of Thừa Thiên Huế.

Displaced by đầu in most major dialects.
