Etymology edit
Derived from Latin torta (“twisted, bent”), the feminine form of the perfect passive participle of the verb torquēre (“to twist, to wind, to turn”). The original meaning is therefore "something which twists, winds; a tendril". Compare dialectal Serbo-Croatian tȑta (“grapevine”).
