tsin ííʼáhígíí

Navajo edit

Etymology edit

tsin (wood) + ííʼá (it sticks up) + -ígíí (nominalizer)

Noun edit

tsin ííʼáhígíí

  1. upright pole, tree

Usage notes edit

While this can be used to mean tree in some instances, such as specifying a standing tree as opposed to a log or other wood lying on the ground, it is not normally used to mean tree. Instead, Navajo requires the species of tree to be used. For example, tʼiis (cottonwood).
