uitvaart
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
From Middle Dutch ûtevaert, from Old Dutch ūtfarth (“departure”), equivalent to uit (“out”) + vaart (“journey”). In Middle Dutch the word was used figuratively for “death, dying”. The modern sense (also already Middle Dutch) is perhaps partially connected to this use, but chiefly follows Latin ex(s)equiae.
