Etymology

From earlier *und (from Proto-Germanic *und (“until”)) + es (“when, relative conjunction”), thus literally "until when". Cognate with Old Frisian und, Old Saxon und, Old High German unz, Gothic 𐌿𐌽𐌳 (und).
