Inherited from Old Spanish viésperas (evening, vespers, eve), inherited from Latin vespera. For the lack of vowel syncope despite being an inherited word, compare áspero, níspero, miércoles. For the development of the stressed vowel, also compare avispa (from Old Spanish biespa).
