Etymology

edit

From Middle Dutch verdiepinge. By surface analysis, verdiepen +‎ ing. Compare German Vertiefung, Swedish fördjupning.

The sense “storey” derives from a late-medieval practice of gaining an additional storey by lowering the floor of a house’s attic and/or putting the ground floor below ground level.
