From Middle Dutch wrāke, wraeck, from Old Dutch wrāka, wrāca, from Proto-Germanic *wrēkō(persecution, revenge), from Proto-Indo-European *wreg-(to drive, press, urge). Cognate with English wrack and wreak(vengenace, revenge), German Rache(revenge). More at wreak.
