From Middle Mongolian ᠵᠠᠰᠠᠭ (ǰasag), whence Mongolian засаг (zasag, rule, power; law) and Mongolian засах (zasakh, to fix, repair); ultimately from Common Turkic *yasa- (determine, govern; create). Cognate with Turkish yasak (prohibition).
