From Proto-Hmong *ʔjɔŋᴮ (“mosquito”). Possibly cognate with Middle Chinese 蠅 (MC ying, “fly”); compare also Thai ยุง (yung, “mosquito”), Lao ຍຸງ (nyung, “id”).
