Conflation of Middle High German setzen (“to set, place down”) (from Proto-Germanic *satjaną) and sitzen (“to sit”) (from *sitjaną). setzen, a weak verb, contributes the infinitive, plural present indicative, and present subjunctive forms; sitzen, a strong verb, the rest.
