Etymology edit

A Northeast Caucasian borrowing. Compare Avar сини (sini), Bezhta сино (sino), Tsakhur суна (suna), Rutul сын (sɨn), Hunzib сыну (sɨnu) etc all meaning "barberry". On these and other Caucasian words see Leksika[1] and NCED,[2] without the Armenian. For the semantics see the correspondence in ծոր (cor).

Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱeno- and cognate with Ancient Greek κενός (kenós).[1][2][3] An Armeno–Greek isogloss.

Ačaṙyan considers synonymous ոսին (osin) an alternative form, without explaining the ո- (o-).[2]
