Inherited from Prakrit 𑀣𑀮 (thala, “dry place, place”), from Sanskrit स्थल (sthála, “dry land, place”).
Cognates include Punjabi ਥਲ (thal), Nepali थल (thal), Assamese থল (thol), Odia ଥଳ (thôḷô), Old Awadhi थल (thala), Gujarati થળ (thaḷ), Marathi थळ (thaḷ). Doublet of थली (thalī).
