Borrowed from Old Khmer caṃnaṃ, caṃnām, caṃṇāṃ, caṃnāṃ (“recollection, remembrance; to recollect, to remember; etc”), extended form of Old Khmer cāṃ, cāṃma, cāṃmma, cāma, caṃ, cām, cāṃm, cam, from which Thai จำ (jam) was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer ចំណាំ (cɑmnam).

- As for pledge, it is a contract by which a person, called pledgor, delivers a specific movable property to another person, called pledgee, as security for the performance of an obligation.
