๐…๐Œน๐ƒ๐Œฐ๐Œฝ

Gothic edit

Pronunciation edit

Etymology 1 edit

From Proto-Germanic *wesanฤ… (โ€œto be, remainโ€), from Proto-Indo-European *hโ‚‚wes-. Compare Latin Vesta (โ€œgoddess of the hearthโ€), Sanskrit เคตเคธเคคเคฟ (vรกsati, โ€œdwellโ€). Some forms are suppletive and instead derive from Proto-Indo-European *hโ‚รฉsti.

Verb edit

๐…๐Œน๐ƒ๐Œฐ๐Œฝ โ€ข (wisan)

  1. to be
Usage notes edit
  • To express the imperative mood, morphologically subjunctive forms of this verb are used instead of morphologically imperative forms (thus sijaiรพ is used with imperative meaning instead of wisiรพ, for example; occurrences of wisiรพ belong to the verb meaning "remain, abide" below instead).

Etymology 2 edit

From Proto-Germanic *wesanฤ… (โ€œto consume, feastโ€), from Proto-Indo-European *wes- (โ€œto grazeโ€). The usage of the adverb ๐…๐Œฐ๐Œน๐Œป๐Œฐ (waila) to qualify this verb is very common (three out of the four total attestations of wisan); the resulting phrase waila wisan (in various conjugated forms) seemingly represents a calque of Ancient Greek ฮตแฝฯ†ฯฮฑฮฏฮฝฮตฯƒฮธฮฑฮน (euphraรญnesthai), which it translates. However, the same Greek verb may also be translated simply as wisan without the adverb waila (Luke 15:24).
