  • As with many things in life, it is much better to do it right the first time.
The community of experienced editors here generally doesn't appreciate being expected to serve as janitorial staff for other editors who refuse to learn the coding standards. We're happy to give some allowances for newcomers, provided they show good faith in learning how things are done: learning how the community here operates, and what quality is required of entries. Refusal to learn how to code a page properly has often been interpreted as active disrespect of the community, and is likely to result in a block.

[Edit conflict] I'd like to spend my time more productively than fixing all these entries... It's nice that you want to be productive, but please abide by our formatting practices. Headwords should always have a headword-line template such as {{head}} or a language-specific equivalent. Categories for the part of speech (such as "proper noun") should be added by this template, so they shouldn't be added down at the bottom. If there is a need to add extra categories, add them at the bottom of the language's section, not at the bottom of the whole page. Language sections should be separated by ----. Also make sure to check the spelling of languages; for example we don't have "Haitian" or "Serbian", we have "Haitian Creole" and "Serbo-Croatian". Ok, but please don't remove the empty lines inside entries. If all the text is packed tight together it's much harder for others to read it. If you look at amerikansk now (edit the page to see the wikicode), that's more or less how it's supposed to look. —CodeCat 00:14, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

Categories for words edit

On Wiktionary, we make a distinction between "lemmas" and "forms". Lemmas are the "main form" of a word, and have proper definitions, while forms only have definitions that point to the lemma and nothing else. Forms are always categorised separately. For example, for nouns there's a separate "noun forms" category (or sometimes a "plurals" category), and also "adjective forms", "verb forms" and so on. Entries like ankommer, appetitten, brusebade, badeværelset, badeværelser and so on should go in that category, not in the main "noun" or "verb" categories as they are not lemmas. I'm glad that you've decided to stay and help. I'm sorry if you felt discouraged at the start. Wiktionary is kind of complicated and has a lot of intricate rules, and the start is always the hardest. We should probably do a better job at writing all those rules down, but most of us have been here for a long time and the rules come naturally to us, so we don't even realise they exist anymore. And I guess people sometimes get frustrated when they realise not everyone understands Wiktionary right from the start. It's a bit like if someone doesn't know how to walk or speak... it's so normal for us now, we forget how hard it was for us to learn it as children. —CodeCat 18:40, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
It's all okay. I understand completely. I was probably going a bit over my head to write entries for all those languages that I have no idea about. I'm very interested in linguistics, which is one reason I'm here. I'm sticking to Danish; it's my second language, and I know the rules for the language. I also see that Wiktionary needs a lot of improvement in the language. For instance, I am surprised that the word for bathroom wasn't even here until I put it there. Also brusebad, or common alternate form of shower, was also not here. We need lots of improvement in these entries. LalalalaSta (talk) 18:46, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

Mona the Vampire etc. edit

Hi. What's the point of these pages? As far as I can see, they could never have entries because of WT:FICTION: you can't mention a TV show etc. independent of reference to the same show! Equinox 19:03, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

See Clifford the Big Red Dog; someone did the same thing and I'm just doing what they did. It is meant to inform them that such a word is not in the dictionary. LalalalaSta (talk) 19:05, 12 April 2014 (UTC)
I believe that should be deleted too. Can we have a discussion on this in, say, WT:BP before you create any more? We previously had a big problem with a lot of irrelevant TV/film stuff being created, and I'd rather not see it happen again... we don't need to list what is in Wikipedia if it isn't relevant to a dictionary. Can you explain why you removed the entire Serbo-Croatian section (see this diff)? While the person who added it isn't fluent in the language, it was worked on by two native speakers, who didn't seem to see anything wrong with it. Use of db edit

This template should only be used for obvious, uncontroversial cases: spam, redirects left from moves, pages where you realized you made a mistake when you created them, etc. If a page has been around for a while, and especially if it's been edited by others with no indication that they saw anything wrong with it, you should probably use one of the request templates: {{rfv}}/{{rfv-sense}} if you think it lacks the usage necessary to meet the WT:CFI, {{rfd}}/{{rfd-sense}} if there's something inherently wrong with it according to the CFI, independent of usage, or {{rfdo}} if it's something other than a regular entry. There are also {{rfv-etymology}} if you think an etymology is wrong, and {{rfm}} if you think something should be moved to or merged with something else. When you add those, you'll see a box in the entry, with a "+" that you can click to create a topic in the appropriate discussion page and explain what you think is wrong with it.

{{db}} and {{delete}} are a way of saying: "There's no need to discuss it- just get rid of it", which can make you seem rude and demanding if you use them inappropriately or too much at once. Chuck Entz (talk) 23:55, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Template:User mg-1 for use in Babel boxes edit

Hello LalalalaSta --

Wandered by to see how you're doing, and noticed that you want to use Template:User mg-1, but it doesn't exist yet. I don't know any Malagasy, but I tracked down User:Jagwar who (I think) is a native speaker, and asked for their help in creating the currently-missing user language templates for Malagasy. They seem to be active, so hopefully it won't take too long to get some kind of response.
