      From cīst(ies) (to try) +‎ -īgs, a less frequently used synonym (and ultimately also cognate) of censties (to try) (q.v.).[1]

      1. diligent, industrious, zealous (who insists on trying to do, to accomplish or to obtain something)
        cītīgs skolniekszealous, industrious student
