From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gāsīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)gʷes-.

Cognates include Lithuanian gèsti, Proto-Slavic *gasiti (whence Russian гаси́ть (gasítʹ), Polish gasić, Czech hasit).
