Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénu-, *ǵénus. Compare the roots *ǵ(o)nH₂dhos, *ǵnH₂dh-, Ancient Greek γνάθος(gnáthos). Compare also Latvian zods(chin), Old Prussian żauna(jaw).
