From Ancient Greek ἀποχωρέω (apokhōréō). Can be synchronically analyzed as απο- (apo-, from) +‎ χωρώ (choró, to hold, take). The root of the second term is the same, but it is a derived form that has the opposite meaning from the Ancient Greek.
