Etymology edit

According to Benveniste, a loanword from a Scythian compound that contains the word for 'cow' (compare Proto-Indo-Iranian *gā́wš) as a first member. The interpretation of the second member is unclear, however we can hardly identify it with Persian روده (rude, intestine) and interpret the whole compound as 'cow-hide'. Alternatively, Lubotsky suggests that the word may derive from a Proto-Iranian source similar to Sanskrit वरूतृ (varūtṛ, one who wards off or protects), thus explaining the long (ū). Remains uncertain.
