From Proto-Indo-European *dl̥h₁gʰós. Cognates include Latin longus, Sanskrit दीर्घ (dīrgha), Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬀 (darǝγa), Old Church Slavonic длъгъ (dlŭgŭ), and Old English lang (English long).
