Learned borrowing from Byzantine Greek εκνευρισμός (ekneurismós, cutting of tendons) with adaptation to modern meaning of εκνευρίζω (eknevrízo, to irritate). By surface analysis, εκνευρίζω (eknevrízo) +‎ -μός (-mós).[1]
