Ancient Greek edit

Etymology edit

From Proto-Indo-European *ḱerdʰ- (herd), like Proto-Germanic *herdō (herd), Proto-Slavic *čerda (file, herd) and Sanskrit शर्धस् (śardhas, multitude, troop). Connection of Welsh cordd (group) is less probable, as this may also derive from Proto-Celtic *koryos (troop, tribe).
