κύπελλον
Ancient Greek edit
Alternative forms edit
- κυπελλίς (kupellís)
Etymology edit
A widespread wanderwort and probably of Pre-Greek origin given the variants. Furnee compares κύπη (kúpē, “kind of ship”), κύβος (kúbos, “cube, square”), κύμβη (kúmbē, “drinking vessel”), and κόμβος (kómbos, “roll”). Also compare Latin cupa (“cask, vat, tub”) and Sanskrit कूप (kūpa, “pit, well, hole”).
