Etymology

edit

Because of the form λητῆρες (lētêres), which is ascribed to the northwestern Athamanes, this word may be a loan from Boeotian. For this reason, the semantically attractive connection with λειτουργός (leitourgós, religious minister), which is from λαός (laós, people), presents difficulties. According to Beekes, the word could be Pre-Greek.
