Of Semitic origin; compare Arabic مَغَارَة (maḡāra, cave), Hebrew מְעָרָה (məʿārâ, cave), Ugaritic 𐎎𐎙𐎗𐎚 (mġrt, cave). Influenced in form and meaning by μέγας (mégas, big, large). See also Latin māgālia.
