Etymology

edit

The word has been connected with πέλλα (pélla, stone) in different ways. Furnée suggests that it shows Pre-Greek interchange π/φ. Alternatively, the word may be related to φελλός (phellós, cork oak), in reference to the unevene and porous structure of cork.
