From Koine Greek ὅριον (hórion, a bound, limit; frontier; region, district) diminutive of Ancient Greek ὅρος (hóros, boundary, limit; frontier; landmark), from Proto-Hellenic *wórwos (whence Mycenaean Greek 𐀺𐀺 (wo-wo)), from Proto-Indo-European *werw-. Compare Latin urvō (to trace, mark out bounds).
