From Classical Mongolian ᠣᠷᠤᠰ᠋ (Orus), from Middle Mongol 斡羅思 (orus), from Old East Slavic Русь (Rusĭ). Initial О- (O-) is a prosthetic determined by vowel harmony, as native Mongolian does not allow a word-initial rhotic consonant.
