From Classical Mongolian ᠬᠢᠲᠠᠳ (Kitad, the Chinese; China, plural), from Middle Mongol ᠺᠢᠲᠠᠳ (Kitad, the Khitans, plural), ultimately from Khitan 𘱿𘲫 (*qid ún).
