Inherited from Old East Slavic Китаи (Kitai), from a Turkic source, ultimately from Old Turkic 𐰶𐰃𐱃𐰪 (Qïtaǰ, Khitan), from Khitan 𘱿𘱤 (*qid i) or 𘱿𘲫 (*qid ún, Khitan), the Mongolic people who ruled Manchuria, then Northern China, then Central Asia from the 9th to 13th centuries.

Doublet of кида́нь (kidánʹ). Cognate with Kazakh Қытай (Qytai), Kyrgyz Кытай (Kıtay), Belarusian Кітай (Kitaj), Karachay-Balkar Къытай (Qıtay), Uyghur خىتاي (xitay), Uzbek Xitoy, Turkmen Hytaý (China) and Chinese 契丹 (Qìdān), English Cathay, etc.
