From Old East Slavic Китай ‎(Kitaй), from a Turkic source, ultimately from Old Turkic Qïtaǰ ‎(Khitan), from Khitan Khita(n), the Mongolic people who ruled Manchuria, then Northern China, then Central Asia from the 9th to 13th centuries. Cognate with Kazakh Қытай ‎(Qıtay), Kyrgyz Кытай ‎(Kıtay), Karachay-Balkar Къытай ‎(Qïtay), Uzbek Xitoy, Turkmen Hytaý ‎(China) and English Cathay, &c.
