From Old East Slavic Китай (Kitaй), from a Turkic source, ultimately from Old Turkic Qïtaǰ (Khitan), from Khitan [Term?] Khita(n), the Mongolic people who ruled Manchuria, then Northern China, then Central Asia from the 9th to 13th centuries. Cognate with Kazakh Қытай (Qıtay), Kyrgyz Кытай (Kıtay), Karachay-Balkar Къытай (Qïtay), Uzbek Xitoy, Turkmen Hytaý (China) and Chinese 契丹, English Cathay, &c.
