From Old East Slavic Китай(Kitaй), from a Turkic source, ultimately from Old Turkic Qïtaǰ(Khitan), from Khitan Khita(n), the Mongolic people who ruled Manchuria, then Northern China, then Central Asia from the 9th to 13th centuries. Cognate with Kazakh Қытай(Qıtay), Kyrgyz Кытай(Kıtay), Karachay-Balkar Къытай(Qïtay), Uzbek Xitoy, Turkmen Hytaý(China) and English Cathay, &c.
