Etymology edit

Analyzable as бума́га (bumága) +‎ -ный (-nyj).

Vasmer hypothesizes that бума́га (bumága) might be a back-formation, and бума́жный (bumážnyj) the original term derived from Italian bambagino (made of cotton wool).
