edit

Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *perkъ, whence also Ukrainian перека (pereka), Ukrainian поперек (poperek), Ukrainian безпереч (bezpereč), Ukrainian уперек (uperek).[1] This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
